Shortly after 2:30 this morning, Wednesday June 30, 2010 units from the District of Columbia Fire Department were dispatched the to the intersection of 13th and R Streets NW for a reported motor vehicle accident with an overturned vehicle with people trapped.
First arriving units reported a SUV overturned with five people trapped, With a report of five people trapped Battalion Fire Chief Shawn Green of the Sixth Battalion requested a second rescue squad to the scene.
The crew of Rescue Squad 1 along with members of Rescue Squad 2 was able to free the trapped victims within 15 minutes. Four adults and a child were transported to several local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Several by-standers reported the SUV was traveling northbound on 13th Street when a second vehicle traveling eastbound on R Street struck the SUV causing the driver of the SUV to lose control of the vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle fled the scene prior to units arriving on the scene.
